Dr. Shaw is the Director of Research, Ascension Health System Osteopathic Division. He is also an Associate Professor, Department of Immunology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Wayne State University. He has served on multiple committees within the University including the Institutional Animal Review Committee and the Human Internal Review Board and serves as a member of the Biohazard Committee at Oakland University.
Dr. Shaw has 30 years of experience in basic science and clinical trials research. During his fellowship at Stanford University Dr. Shaw was the first to publish a novel strategy to treat autoimmune disease using gene therapy to alter T cells for transfer to patients. As Director of the Stem Cell Laboratories at the Karmanos Cancer Institute he pioneered techniques for expanding T cell progenitors for transfer into human cancer patients.
He is the author of over 50 peer reviewed research papers and two book chapters, and is the recipient of nearly 8 million dollars of grant monies from the National institutes of Science and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society among others. He has served as a reviewer for multiple NIH and AHA study sections, reviewing both regular, fellowship and SBIR grants. He has three patent applications and one award.
